Excel to web app: how to convert a spreadsheet into a web application

To convert Excel into a web app, map the sheet's columns, formulas and users, prototype the screens, build the app, import your data and run both side by side before switching. At Neyven that is a Build package, ₹1.5L–3.5L, in 3–4 weeks. You own the code.

What are the steps to convert an Excel sheet into a web app?

  1. Choose one sheet or one workflow. Converting everything at once is how these projects stall.
  2. List every column, formula, dropdown and colour code, and who edits what. Unused columns get dropped here.
  3. Name the roles: who enters data, who approves, who only views.
  4. Prototype the screens and click through them before any code is written.
  5. Build in slices, with a live preview link you can open as it grows.
  6. Import the real data, fix duplicates and bad rows, and agree the cleaned set.
  7. Run the sheet and the app side by side for a short period, then switch and keep the sheet as an archive.

Formulas become rules inside the app, so totals and statuses are calculated the same way for everyone. The wider case for moving off sheets is in replacing spreadsheets with custom software.

How much does it cost to convert Excel into a web app in India?

Neyven Build packages are ₹1.5L–3.5L for one workflow, with price set by a written scope before work starts. A typical single-workflow tool with a couple of integrations is ₹1.7L–₹2.5L.

What moves the price. Your written scope fixes the actual number.
FactorEffect on cost
Number of rolesMore roles mean more screens, permissions and testing
Approvals and alertsEach approval step or WhatsApp or email alert adds work
IntegrationsTally, payment gateways and WhatsApp are listed and priced one by one
Data qualityMessy, duplicated sheets take longer to clean and import
Number of sheetsMany linked sheets can move the project into Platform, ₹3.5L–8L

Try the cost estimator for a range from your answers, or read what you get at each Neyven price. WhatsApp message fees and hosting are paid to those providers, not Neyven.

How long does the conversion take?

Typical timeline for a Build package. Larger scopes take longer.
WhenWhat happens
Week 1Sheet mapped, scope written, clickable prototype to review
Weeks 2–3App built in slices with a live preview
Weeks 3–4Data imported, side-by-side run, switch-over and handover

The calendar depends on how quickly you can review each preview and confirm the cleaned data. Systems with many sheets ship in phases, one workflow at a time. See how we build for the method.

When should you not convert Excel into a web app?

  • One person uses the sheet and nobody depends on it.
  • It is a one-off calculation, analysis or finance model that an accountant owns.
  • The process changes every week, so nobody can say what the rules are yet. Settle the process first.
  • A standard product already does the job. Buy it, and see low-code versus custom software for the trade-offs.

A good build can still link to the sheets you keep, for example by exporting a clean report to Excel or CSV.

What should you prepare before you start?

Bring the file as it is used today, not a tidied copy. Add a few lines on who uses it, what goes wrong and which report management reads. Remove personal data you do not need to share; the real data is imported later under agreed access.

Our internal tool guide covers what an app for your own team usually includes, and workflow automation covers alerts and approvals.

Frequently asked questions

Can you convert my Excel file automatically?

No tool converts a working sheet into a good app by itself. We read the file, map the logic and rebuild it, then import your data and check it with you.

Will the app look like my spreadsheet?

It keeps your column names and terms so the team recognises it. Screens, roles and dashboards are designed for the work, not copied cell by cell.

Does it work with Google Sheets too?

Yes. The process is the same for Excel and Google Sheets.

Can we still export to Excel?

Yes. Any list or report can be exported to Excel or CSV.

Who owns the code?

You do. Source code, hosting and accounts are handed over with documentation, and there are no per-seat fees from Neyven.

What if the sheet has years of data?

We import it in stages, flag duplicates and bad rows, and agree the cleaned data with you before go-live.
